The Pumpkin Field Day, South Charleston, Ohio


About 8 acres of pumpkin research are at the western branch. This is one of the greatest concentrations of pumpkin research in the state. The field day covered many topics including the use of Sandea and Strategy herbicides in pumpkins, fungicide and variety plot work, giant pumpkin production, the use of Admire, perimeter trap crops, and Kairomone traps to reduce cucumber beetles, and cover crops used in pumpkin production.

Tour host and southwest OH extension IPM agent, Jim Jasinski explains the principle behind trap cropping for cucumber beetle control. Also discussed, the use of the new Kairomone traps, (extreme right), as a possible tool in trapping and control of cucumber beetles. .



Dr. Mac Riedel explains the procedures involved in a comprehensive pumpkin disease control program. Also on view were Dr. Riedel's plots where he is testing new pumpkin fungicides. The colored flags represent different fungicide treatments.

Andy Wyenandt, graduate student in Plant Pathology, explained his work with cover crops in pumpkins for weed control and fusarium fruit rot control.
