Crop Report By Ron
Becker,
Harvest is continuing in the field for peppers, sweet corn,
zucchini, cucumbers and fall crops such as pumpkins, gourds, winter squash and
Indian Corn. In high tunnels, tomatoes are still
being harvested and some growers are giving thought to putting in
lettuce. The quality of pumpkins has been very good with little rot
either in the field or short term storage. What problems are being found
in pumpkins and winter squash are symptoms from viruses (bumpy fruit or rings
on the fruit). Downy mildew is causing problems in some late plantings of
cauliflower. Fall planted cauliflower is also tending to be 1-2 weeks
behind in development. In some cases this has been due to late
planting. But in other fields that were planted the same time as in
previous years, development has been slower than normal.
The 2006 UI sweet corn hybrid disease nursery report is now
available [PDF file] and includes reactions of 379 hybrids to Stewart's wilt,
NLB, common rust (D and G virulent isolates), MDM, SLB, southern rust, and Callisto and Accent herbicides.
Also, an Excel file of Table 3 from the report is available as you
may wish to sort through the 379 hybrids in the 2006 trials. These
reports also are available at the UI sweet corn pathology web site: www.sweetcorn.uiuc.edu
I have them also available for downloading at the VegNet website:http://vegnet.osu.edu
If you do not have internet access or the ability to read PDF or
Excel files, I can send you a hard copy through regular mail. The files are too
large to fax. To request a hard copy, contact me; email: precheur.1@osu.edu
