Movento approved for thrips
control on dry bulb onions
by Celeste Welty. Extension Entomologist
Yesterday the EPA approved the use of Movento (spirotetramat) in Ohio for control of onion thrips on dry bulb onions, by a Section 18 specific
exemption. This use is allowed from now until 15
September 2009. The rate is 5 fluid ounces of formulated product per
application in no more than two applications per acre per season. There is a
7-day pre-harvest interval (PHI). Precautions should be taken to protect bees
from exposure to this product and its residues. The memo from EPA with these
details is posted on the internet at:

Insect update July15-22
Trapped in Big Bend Region, Portland,
OH 2 Corn earworm moths
Trapped in Racine area 8 Corn earworm moths
Trapped in Racine area
0 Beet Army worm moths
Continues to be extremely dry- irrigating tomatoes, peppers, cantaloups,
sweet corn. Seeing leaf curl in field corn and soybeans in
lower part of the county on the gravelly soil.
Tomatoes, sweet corn and peppers are
in good supply for local and regional markets.
Seeing some phytophthora
in both hot and bell peppers especially in low areas of the field. Blossom end rot on third set of tomatoes formed in
late June when temperatures were in nineties and dry weather occurred. Both
early blight and Septoria leaf blight have shown up
in tomato fields.
Some corn earworm
have been found in sweet corn ears where sprays have not been applied on
a regular basis. Watch both trap counts due to moth flights and daily
temperatures over 80 degrees Fahrenheit
effecting silk growth.
