At Hillsboro, This Pumpkin Cultivar Trial compared 23 cultivars from different size categories using 4 replications of each cultivar.  Objectives were to evaluate potential pumpkin cultivars for their suitability in a southern Ohio growing season.  The plots were located at the Ohio State University Enterprise Center research and demonstration plots at Southern States Community College in Hillsboro, Ohio.

Planting:  On a Haubstadt silt loam, fertilizer was applied as 120 lbs. N,  120 lbs. P2O5,  102 lbs. K2O per acre prior to planting according to soil test recommendations. Pumpkins were direct seeded to the field on June 9, 2000 in rows planted 10 feet apart, with 3 feet between each seed.

Weed Control:  4 pt./acre Curbit 3EC was applied after planting;  hand hoed and cultivated as necessary.

Pest Management:  2.5 fl. Oz. Furadan 4F per 1000 linear feet of row applied as a 7 inch band over the row after planting.  5 fl. oz/acre of Pounce and 1 qt./acre of Sevin XLR was applied with the fungicide applications.  Fungicides applied were as follows:  2 lb./acre Bravo Ultrex as a tank mix with 0.5lb/acre of Benlate rotated with 15.4 oz./acre of Quadras. Harvest was on October 11, 2000

RESULTS:

Vine health and quality remained good throughout the growing season.  Pumpkin yield and quality attributes were collected and observed.

Pro Gold 500, Autumn King and Trojan yielded best of the large size cultivars, averaging  20 tons per acre or better.  The average fruit weight of these cultivars ranged from 21 lbs. to 22 lbs.

Gold Fever, Gold Standard and Howdy Doody were best among the medium size cultivars, all yielding between 14 and 17 tons per acre. In this size category the average fruit weight ranged from 11 to 17 lbs. per pumpkin.

The best yielding pumpkins in the small category were Touch of Autumn, Pik-A-Pie and Mystic, with yields of 8 to 12 tons per acre. In this size category the average fruit weight ranged from 5 lbs. to 7 lbs. per pumpkin.

Summary of Results at Columbus

In Columbus, the cultivars were divided into 2 experiments or size categories. In each experiment, half of the 4 replications were sprayed with a standard chemical disease control program and all plots received standard insecticide applications during the season.  Because of a sprayer malfunction, there were only 2 fungicide applications for powdery mildew control. Even with this minimal disease control program there was a significant difference in powdery mildew development on no fungicide plots compared to fungicide treated plots. The varieties Merlin and Magic Lantern showed significant resistance to powdery mildew development on the foliage compared to other varieties. In regards to handle quality, even though there was no significant difference between fungicide treated and no fungicide plots, the varieties Howden, Lil Pump-ke-mon, Autumn King, Merlin and Magic Lantern had handles significantly free of powdery mildew in comparison to Gold Fever and Gold Bullion.

The best large and medium sized varieties in terms of tons per acre were: Gold Rush, Autumn King, Pro Gold 200 and Howdy Doody. The largest average fruit size (lb per fruit) was observed in varieties: Magic Lantern, Gold Rush and Howden Biggie. The best small varieties with an average fruit size of 2-4 lbs were Touch of Autumn at 6 tons/A and Pic-A-Pie, 4 tons/A. Touch of Autumn has good tolerance to powdery mildew.
